I am the mother of a gay son.  I knew he was gay before he ever learned what the word meant.  I never had reason to look for support.  I grew up with a lesbian sister so being gay was a natural human experience accepted in my family.  PFLAG found me after my attendance to about 3 meetings.  I was first invited to attend to watch a movie and then I went back two more times for the guest speakers.  It was after my third meeting that I realized there was a support group that met after the speakers.  That was 13 years ago.  PFLAG has a saying, “When you no longer need PFLAG, that’s when PFLAG needs you.”  That saying could not be more true.  Even though I didn’t seek out support, I felt I could offer my personal experiences raising my son who is gay.  Just like every other mother in the world, I love my son more than anything and I wanted him to grow up confident in being his true self.
